KlezKids, Kindernest and KlezTeens Programs: A Model for Yiddish Continuity

KlezKamp's unique children's programs, co-directed by Sarah Gordon and Marilla Wex, provide an opportunity for the next generation to immerse themselves in Yiddish culture, folk arts and community. Our dynamic staff includes professional educators, scholars, graduates of the KlezKamp children's program, and visual and performing artists.

The Kindernest, for children ages 2 to 6, provides a nurturing, energetic and loving environment enriched with Yiddish music, language, games and art. This all-day program includes snack, outdoor play and rest time. Children eat lunch with their families. Parents and family members are required to join the Kindernest program for one period a day.

The KlezKids program, for those ages 6 to 11, provides an opportunity to create, learn and meet new friends. KlezKids' days are filled with diverse art projects, music, dance, puppetry, language arts, sports, yoga, theater and more! The Oomchicks (for ages 2-7) and Youth Orchestra (ages 8-17) offer each child a chance to take part in an age-appropriate klezmer ensemblelearning music by ear. Fort teens (ages 12 and up), Jenny Romaine will again be directing the Youth Theater Workshop, which will create an original work related to this year's theme.

Teens are also invited to volunteer as KlezKATs (KlezTeen Assistant Teachers) to share their talents and energy with Klez Kids and/or Kindernest. Interested teens should email Sarah at klezkinder@gmail.com.

In addition, many teens, especially those who play instruments, enjoy taking adult classes. Please see the individual listings for the many courses available that might be of interest to those in this age group.

Youth Orchestra/AM2 Michael Winograd

Klezmorim ages 8-17 who study an instrument or play in their school band are invited to join. Music will be learned by ear. Children participating in the KlezKids program will be brought to the session.

Oomchicks/PM1 Jessica Kligman

For younger children who want to be part of a klezmer band. Percussion instruments will be made available. Please bring your own recorder, keyboard, etc.

Youth Theater Workshop/PM1 AND PM2 Jenny Romaine (class meets both afternoon periods)

Students will again create an original work of contemporary Yiddish theater under the tutelage of Jenny Romaine. The Youth Theatre Workshop performance is a highlight of the last night of KlezKamp. KlezKampers ages 12-17 are invited to a week of challenge, controversy, heightened consciousness and great fun. This class meets for 2 periods each afternoon.
